The Free Legion
What is left of the old armies, volunteers and mercenaries who want Aurium to belong to everyone. Olive green, orange bands.
A toy-army strategy game for PC
Raise a base of wood, sandbags and concrete, pick your troops and your cards, then take the fight to other commanders across the war map of Varkan.
01 // The setting
A rain of meteorites hit the continent of Varkan. Out of the craters came Aurium, a crystal that gives almost endless energy. The old countries fell apart and the continent broke into territories held by rival armies, each fighting for every deposit.
What is left of the old armies, volunteers and mercenaries who want Aurium to belong to everyone. Olive green, orange bands.
General Kragov's disciplined army wants all of the crystal for itself. Steel blue, red bands. Same box of toy soldiers.
02 // Choose a battle
Your base is home. Every battle starts from it and comes back to it. Battles pay dollars, dollars raise your base.

Pick another commander's base on the war map. Choose up to six kinds of troops and a deck of cards, drive the convoy to the front and send your soldiers in by hand, paying supplies for each.

Your base is attacked wave after wave, without end and ever harder. Twenty waves are written by hand; from wave 20 the Dominion sends its best troops under captains who rise in rank.

Your base fights on its own: the barracks send their troops and the headquarters sends scouts. You play the commander cards, earned from the enemies that fall.

A friendly fight between two friends, base against base, on a field that stretches between them. A running score of wins, losses and draws.

When another commander attacks your base while you're in the game, an alarm rings. Join the defense as it happens. Once a day the Dominion may also strike on its own.
03 // Day, night & weather
Day and night follow the real hour. After dark your battles are fought at night, and your base waits in the dark with its lamps lit.
// The front's clock
Real hour
Day & nightby the hour in Romania
The sun rises later in winter and sets later in summer, as it does in Romania. The night deepens until midnight, stays darkest until five, then pales toward sunrise. Raids, sieges and duels set by the server keep Bucharest's hour; a battle you start keeps your PC's.
Clear
Real shadows under every soldier, building and tree, and the shadows of the clouds drifting across the field.
Rain
It starts as a drizzle and grows. The ground darkens, puddles fill the ruts, and a storm brings lightning and thunder.
Fog
A bank of fog two metres deep lies on the field, and the troops wade into it to the waist.
Snow
The field whitens as it falls, and the snow settles on the trees, the roofs and the helmets.
Night
Beyond it the enemy shows only as a red silhouette, on the field and on the radar: you know something is coming, not what.
Where your base stands decides the sky
Varkan Plains
Mostly clear: open fights, no surprises.
Eastern Marshes
Rain in half the battles, and the rain slows the troops attacking you.
Valley of Mists
Fog in half the battles: snipers and towers see less.
Frozen North
Snow lies on the ground, and it never rains.
04 // The war map
Every territory holds another player's base. Pick a target, read its defense and garrison, and go. Tap the markers to read the map.
Your base holds its own territory on the island. Every battle starts here and comes back here.
Three stars per base: bring down the headquarters to win, every building before it for all three. New stars on the map pay gold.
Your friends are marked on the map, ready for a friendly attack.
No target in mind? Let the game pick a base for you.
Each front counts the stars you hold and the dollars still to win.
Some bases stay locked until your headquarters grows strong enough to face them.
05 // Your base
Place every building yourself, anywhere in your half of the field, turned as you like. Walls snap end to end; the enemy walks around them by any open path and breaks through the weakest one only if you close the base off.
Wall tiers
Tear down an upgraded building and every dollar put into it comes back.

Every troop shoots at the building you point at.

08 // The commander's road
Experience from every battle raises your commander level, up to 50, through eleven ranks. Each level unlocks troops, cards or build points; past level 20, every level pays dollars.

09 // New on the front
What the last updates brought. The game updates itself, and the roadmap says what comes next.
Winter with snow and frosted trees, autumn in orange and red, spring in bloom, the desert with its palms and cacti. In the shop under Looks; wear one from the wardrobe, or let the calendar choose.
A building you place goes up behind a scaffold: the engineers hammer away and it rises a course at a time until it stands.
The captain comes out of your headquarters holding his pistol like an officer, the sniper wears a ghillie, the machine gunner carries an MG 42.
A new start screen, battle cards that come alive, a cleaner battle HUD and loading screens that wait until the battle runs smoothly.
Four troop camps redrawn: the flamethrowers' fuel point, the gas troopers' decontamination shelter, the special forces' camp and the convoy's tent. The flamethrower reaches 14 m and the gas trooper 15 m.
Every battle that pays is replayed and verified. No cheated stars on the map.
A sign-in from a new device is announced in the game. “It wasn't me” signs it out everywhere else.
The Online world needs just a name and a password. Your base lives on the server.
Free for Windows 10 and 11. Build tonight, storm a base before bed.
